English for Workplace Safety
Project description
With funding from Alberta Human Services and in partnership with the Alberta Construction Association (ACA) and the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA), AWES developed a four-module training program to help English language learners understand and apply key workplace safety concepts. The program integrated language learning with critical safety terms and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) law, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), workplace hazards, and WHMIS.
Lessons were designed to be flexible, usable in classrooms, workplaces, or independently, and to prepare learners for conventional safety training required by employers. By combining language development with safety content, the project created a practical tool that helps newcomers build confidence in understanding safety information and completing tasks safely in Canadian workplaces.
