WHMIS 2022 Updates
Canada introduced changes to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) in December 2022, often called WHMIS 2022. These amendments update the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) to align with the 7th edition of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and parts of the 8th edition. There is a transition period until December 14, 2025. During this time, workplaces may still see WHMIS 2015-compliant products, but all employers and trainers should prepare for the WHMIS 2022 standard.
Key Changes You Should Know
New Hazard Classes: Chemicals Under Pressure added; expanded categories for Flammable Gases (including non-flammable aerosols and chemically unstable gases). Classification Updates: Revised criteria for some hazard classes; more precise subcategories for consistency. Labels: Same format as before, but with refined hazard and precautionary statements. Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Section 9 now includes more physical/chemical details; stricter rules for ingredient disclosure; clearer language across several sections.
What This Means for Training
Trainers can still use WHMIS 2015 materials, but should include WHMIS 2022 information so employees understand the new hazard class and SDS changes. Workplaces should update labels, SDS binders, and safety procedures ahead of the 2025 transition deadline.
